E3D Pty Ltd was established in 1995 and has been involved in Naval Architecture, Oil & Gas and for the past 18 years in Mining. This experience gained in different industries allows e3D to think beyond "the way it has always been done" and find innovations and efficiencies in design systems and project workflows. We have always designed projects in 3D, and entering into the Mining industry in 2003, we found that most Mining companies involved in Engineering and Design were still working in 2D. Since that time, e3D has set up many Mining companies 3D CAD systems using Bentley's Structural Modeller, trained many Designers to use these tools, and established efficient workflows and procedures for using 3D to design Mines and Process Plants.
In 2013, Bentley phased out Structural Modeller and merged it into AECOsim (now Openbuildings) to create a BIM capable 3D CAD system that combined the Structural, Concrete, Mechanical, Piping, and Electrical disciplines into the one 3D design package. It was then that e3D recognized the incredible power (and the problems it would solve) of this BIM-capable CAD system if set up properly for doing projects in the Mining and Process Plant industries. Unfortunately, the Engineering companies e3D were sub contracting to neither had the budget nor shared the vision to set up their 3D CAD systems to enable incorporating this game-changing MIM to Digital Engineering (DE) for their projects.
Since 2015, e3D has invested its time and funds into solving three problems,
Our vision is that of an integrated digital asset that builds through a project's life from its first conception through design, tendering, construction planning, delivery, commissioning, handover, and operations for the efficient and innovative construction of the built environment. That the pathway for this to happen is to have an integrated 3D MIM "Mining Information Modelling" (BIM for Mining) system as the original 3D design models containing the single source of the centralized data asset and the use of Digital Engineering (DE) further to utilize the data and models for electronic schedules, cost, sustainability, and asset management.
Our core existence is to help, support, promote, and partner with Engineering and Design companies in the Mining industry, whether they are small, medium, or large, who share the MIM to Digital Engineering vision. Companies that see this as the way to maximize value and de-risk projects for their clients. To work for companies who still believe that the most successful outcomes for projects lie in their Engineering and Design quality and the accuracy and detail of the information they supply at the Construction phase. We exist to supply your Designers and Engineers with the systems, tools, support, and training to enable your company to become or maintain leadership and be known in the Mining Industry to supply high-quality design deliverables using MIM to DE systems workflows as the core to achieving this goal.
Darren has over 30 years experience in the Naval Architecture, Oil & Gas and Mining Resources engineering industries in various roles. He has implemented and managed smart BIM/MIM technologies and efficient workflows to maximize client value for designing projects. He has lead teams of between 4-60 staff members, managed or has been part of the delivery team for 50+ projects ranging from $100k-$6bn. 4,000+ hours of presenting and training on various subjects, including innovation, teamwork, project execution, and efficiencies in project workflows and design systems. Darren is particularly skilled at understanding project workflows between designing, engineering, scheduling, cost estimating, management, clients, and HSE teams. He can establish design and engineering systems to match workflows and maximize efficiencies reinforced by his strong design skills and experience.
Darren's work is distinguished by his ability to recognize and incorporate the common data denominators that bind all of the project activities together (not just design and engineering). His philosophy is to treat all project data like a central nervous system that supplies critical project information to those who need it the most. This assists the project team to achieve very high quality and accurate project outcomes requiring "Less effort" while producing "higher quality", "faster."
